TLMI Label Awards 2018
Multi-Color Corporation North America Wine and Spirits is the winner of the coveted Best of Show award at the 2018 TLMI Label Awards competition.  Earning the top prize is the Sidewinder Spirits Co. entry, in the category Offset – Wine & Spirits – Line & Screen Tone – Prime. This unique label presented the challenge of providing two entirely different looks, with one side taking on a metallic look and the other non-metallic.

It’s been a good year for Sidewinder Spirits’ brand owner, Livermore, CA-based Occasio Winery. This label also took home the top prize at the 2018 FINAT label awards. In addition to Best of Show, the Sidewinder Spirits Co. label also won Best of Class in its category. Including the overall winner, there were seven Best of Class winners. McDowell Label & Screen Printing is a two-time Best of Class winner. The other Best of Class honors went to Syracuse Label & Surround Printing, Labeltronix, Multi-Color Mexico, and Control Group.

ENTRY: Sidewinder Spirits Co.
SPECIAL CHALLENGES:  To complete the job, Multi-Color North America Wine & Spirits had to print colors, apply varnishes, apply doming silkscreen, and then utilize a flatbed sculpted embossing tool for maximum depth and detail. Lastly, the label was diecut through a thick material in order to pull out the small piece in the watch handle.

Syracuse Label & Surround Printing

CATEGORY:  Digital – Toner – Wine & Spirits – Color Process – Prime
ENTRY: Drawbridge Gin
SPECIAL CHALLENGES: To complete this dual image label, print had to be done on two separate substrates, which were then married together on finishing equipment. Not only did this require multiple passes on the finishing equipment, but the printed graphics around the porthole needed to be precisely placed between the two substrates in order to get a proper view of the target while also allowing for the porthole cut to be in register.

SPECIAL CHALLENGES: The high definition image outputted at 200 lpi. Printing with vibrant colors and extremely smooth edges to zero were required. Heavy saturation in the fruit was needed while still maintaining high detail in the flowers.

SPECIAL CHALLENGES: 12-color printing using flexo, rotary screen, registered fresnal cold foil lens, standard cold foil (in separate unit) lamination, custom glitter formula and varnish. The job was technically challenging as the fresnal lens is registered to eye mark for specific placement, and three separate rows across were individually registered independent of each other. A separate station was used for standard cold foil. A custom glitter formula was designed to meet customer specifications using a specially cut anilox. All printing was done inline in one pass with registered diecutting in the final process.

SPECIAL CHALLENGES:The kraft look at the bottom of the label was created out of process colors. Two dies were used to leave the Sunset logo attached to the bottom layer when peeled. Yerecic Label also had to match in two UVs on the face – gloss for the top portion and matte for the kraft portion.

ENTRY: Campbell’s Incredibles Promotional Label
SPECIAL CHALLENGES: With increasing competition on the shelf, Campbell Soup Company expressed a desire and a challenge to Hammer to explore some different printing techniques to give their promotional label a “pop.” The UV matte varnish and UV gloss coating allows the characters to really stand out on the label. The end result is an eye-catching image, perfect for young children.

SPECIAL CHALLENGES:The customer requested a look that emulates an old copper still with the labeling, both visually and with a tactile surface. The effect was achieved through a combination of multiple inks cured in a very proprietary method, which when combined with a unique raised varnish and shrunk onto the container gave the desired affect.

SPECIAL CHALLENGES: The device is flexo-printed with a screen printed, aggressive patterned hot-melt adhesive, in register with the print and diecut to enhance the performance of the product. It is constructed with a clear film with transparent print to allow the graduations of the syringe to remain visible with the device attached. To prevent tampering, besides the aggressive adhesive, the parts have tamper slits designed so the device destructs easily to indicate tampering when in use, yet allows for easy handling of the part during application.
